MySpace??

Apr 23rd, 2007 by | 4

i wonder if i should look into myspace more closely. i have a space, but never really used it (actually just made a new one to try playing with again). like so many other sn sites, i never really found the time to play with it…or really found it particularly useful. i prefer networking through my blog and conferences and even my skype account.

do you use myspace? how is that working for you?

Myspace has been good to me (http://profile.myspace.com/45778509). I have made some connections that have been taken up outside of Myspace; had a tune accepted for a CD compilation (don’t even know which country it was produced in), finding old friends again, and keeping in touch with others around the world. However, I think the term “MY” space is a misnomer; it is tightly controlled and does not allow for much intervention by users in the formats used. However I believe that it opens up new worlds and modes of expression for millions of people. The online paper “Copy and Paste Literacy: Literacy practices in the production of a Myspace profile” by Dan Perkel (http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/~dperkel/media/dperkel_literacymyspace.pdf) I think is a good place to start for evaluating what is going on re: Myspace.

You might find this interesting – its a graph of MySpace users’ and voting habits in the UK. MySpace users are statistically less likely to be voters in the UK.

Thanks Nathan. I wonder if there is a connection? If one is an active participant in an online community, why not be active in the offline one? Maybe the online community fulfills their needs better and they are more prone to be active there? Of course, these are sweeping generalities which one should not infer only from statistics. :-)

myspace has become symbolic of the web2.0 hubris that is supposed to change the world yet does nothing but re-enforce the mainstream logic. oh yeah.. plus the annoying fake people messaging you to try their band or whatever.
Ive been on myspace since the days when there were 50 people on there.. it was remotely fun back then, still serves a small purpose to comm. with american friends.. but otherwise.. its a turd sandwich.
Ive been playing with Facebook… more Hubris… with some interesting yet annoying options.
